>>> hi, thanks for joining us. i'm maureen ume. >>> the top story tonight, the wind. the wind advisory expired about an hour ago. still, it is still pretty windy. how strong were the winds? let's go to fox 5's gwen tolbart. how strong were they out there, gwen? >> reporter: we had record at reagan national airport, dulles as well as baltimore were in excess of 40 to 45 miles per hour, reaching up to 51, actually, at dulles. there are some areas that maybe we didn't get reporting stations from yet. we'll have some update on that, but those winds are definitely strong. these are official numbers that came in just prior to the 5:00 hour. here is a look at current wind gusts now, still vety strong, from 17 to 32 miles per hour. they're going to start to diminish and that's good news. we'll have light wind as we move into the overnight hours. temperatures, 40 degrees at reagan. 37 at dulles. i want to say that those winds today gave a significant wind chill and only felt like it was in the low 20s in many of our neighborhoods. skies not too bad. we had a few clouds. we are looking

you're used to. as long as people recognize they're moving to the desert and give up this notion that they have to bring eastern vegetation with them and make the necessary adaptations in their own life, desert communities can continue to live. man: the biggest water user in the desert is turf. turf uses a lot of irrigation and uses spray irrigation, so what we've done here is use artificial turf. you're never going to be able to achieve the look of back east or the look of, say, california, with subtropical plants, but our landscapes are still lush and use about 30% of what the subtropical landscape with turf would use. las vegas has adopted a drought tolerant ordinance. we're using less water today than we used five years ago, despite over 300,000 new residents. i think it's a pretty amazing example as to how a town can really turn on a dime if there's the political will and if the public gets behind it. narrator: even the casinos and resorts have adapted to efficient water use. mulroy: the las vegas strip uses only 3% of all the water that we deliver. and when you think about

springs eternal and i know we have it in us to come together and do the right thing. >> listen to that, and it seems like they are both positive and feel something can get done. while both sides are away, the away and president in hawaii, can they get something done? >> reporter: well, look, richard, this will be a working vacation for president obama and i can also tell you that staffers on both sides of pennsylvania avenue will be in talks over the next several days despite the fact that they are technically on vacation. will they be able to get manage done that is significant over the next several days? probably not. but of course, lawmakers will head back to d.c. after the christmas holiday and resume negotiations again, and i expect we will see president obama cut his vacation short. there's time to get something done, the president said, look, we are probably not going get a large deal, he is at this point urgenting members of congress to work together to at least prevent taxes from going up. he had has acknowledged that there's not enough time to get a large sweeping deal done.
